Frequently asked questions about plastic surgery
Clear answers before you book a consultation
These answers cover common questions about plastic surgery at AJ Plastic Surgery Centre in Nairobi.
The information is general and does not replace a personal consultation. Your suitability, risks, recovery plan, and treatment options can only be confirmed after your surgeon reviews your health, anatomy, goals, and expectations.
Consultation and booking
Yes. A consultation is required before any surgical recommendation is made. Your surgeon will review your health history, assess your anatomy, discuss your goals, and explain what may be suitable, realistic, and safe for you.
A consultation fee may apply when booking your appointment. The team will confirm the current fee and explain how it is handled before your consultation is scheduled.
This is usually not advisable for major surgery. Most procedures require medical review, planning, pre-operative instructions, consent, and sometimes lab tests or clearance. Smaller treatments may have a shorter timeline depending on suitability and clinic availability.
Virtual consultations may be available for patients outside Nairobi or outside Kenya. You may be asked to share information and photos securely before the consultation so the team can guide you on the next step.
Suitability and medical clearance
This depends on your condition, control of symptoms, current medication, and the procedure being considered. You may need clearance from your primary doctor or specialist before surgery. Your surgeon will review this during consultation.
BMI is one of the factors considered, but it is not the only one. Your surgeon will also assess your health, anatomy, weight stability, smoking status, and procedure risk. Some patients may be advised to lose weight first for safety.
Yes. Smoking can increase the risk of wound-healing problems and complications. Your surgeon will advise how long you should stop before and after surgery based on your procedure and smoking history.
Procedure planning
Sometimes, but not always. Combining procedures depends on your health, the expected theatre time, recovery needs, and whether aftercare can be managed safely. Some combinations may be staged for better safety and healing.
The right procedure depends on your concern, anatomy, health, skin quality, expectations, and recovery capacity. During consultation, your surgeon will explain your options and whether surgery or a non-surgical approach is more suitable.
Recovery and aftercare
Recovery varies by procedure. Some non-surgical treatments have little downtime, while surgical procedures may require days to weeks of reduced activity. Your surgeon will give you a procedure-specific recovery plan during consultation.
For most surgical procedures, yes. You may need someone to take you home and assist you during the first stage of recovery. The team will explain the support needed based on your procedure.
This depends on the procedure and your healing progress. Light walking is often encouraged early, but strenuous activity usually needs to wait until your surgeon clears you.
Fees and financing
Procedure cost depends on your anatomy, treatment complexity, theatre time, anaesthesia, aftercare needs, and whether procedures are combined. The team can guide you on pricing after your consultation and assessment.
Many cosmetic procedures are not covered by insurance. Some medically necessary or reconstructive procedures may be reviewed differently by insurers. You should confirm with your insurer and discuss your case during consultation.
Privacy
Yes. Your enquiry and consultation are handled with privacy. The clinic uses your information to guide care, schedule appointments, and support your treatment process.
